Bonfire of the Insanities

A photographer caught some wannabe jihadi jackwagon throwing rocks at the police and vandalizing property in Oakland while wearing a Palestinian-style keffiyeh.

Idiot's Intifada

This just reinforces the stereotype of the "We are the World" American wacktivist wankers, imitating what they see on CNN, too lazy and too cowardly to put it on the line like Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell and others on the left did back in the 1930's.

The Socialists of the 1930's went to Spain and fought the fascists; today's leftists bleat on about the Palestinians, Colombian campesinos and oppressive Middle Eastern regimes, but they don't do anything about them.

Like a twisted Civil War reenactment club, they instead dress up as hippies and don costumes of their favorite radicals, and assault their urban environs with fantasies of Latin American Revolutions and Arab Springs dancing through their fluffy little brains.  Until the dingbat in the Palestinian headscarf heads to Gaza and starts throwing rocks at Israeli tanks, he's just another pantywaist playing dress up.

Latte Leftists

Our pampered populists are latte leftists playing dress-up, too scared to go fight any real oppression. So instead, they attack the America that swaddles them in comfort and modern bounty.  They trash the municipalities that host cell phone towers and free WiFi for their iPhones and laptops.  The disciplined and humane police forces provide additional incentive to protest here instead of abroad. Instead of being thrown head first into a fetid, dank gulag bloody and broken, they are escorted into a bright clean cell where they can sip publicly funded hot coco until a communist party lawyer, pockets stuffed with wealthy liberals' guilt money, comes down to bail them out.

Rage Against the Reagan Revolution

This is not about fighting oppression. This is the left's poop throwing primal scream against the greatest president of the 20th century and his lifting half a billion people out of poverty.

Three decades later, the triumph of Reaganism is remarkable. In the United States and Britain taxes shrank, regulation, especially of the financial sector, was pruned back, and state companies were sold off. Even Brussels was nudged toward liberalization.
The impact on the rest of the world was even more profound. Soviet Communism collapsed, China converted to capitalism and entered the world economy, India dismantled its protectionist License Raj, and many emerging market economies in Latin America and Africa embraced liberalization as the path to growth.
One result has been an unprecedented global economic boom. Its biggest beneficiaries have been some of the world’s poorest people, particularly in China and India: Shaohua Chen and Martin Ravallion of the World Bank have found that between 1981 and 2005, the number of people living in poverty in the developing world fell by 500 million. (Chrystia Freeland)
The screaming OWS drum beaters are frustrated because the tea parties already have the anti-crony crapitalism turf staked out...
Palin’s remedy to crony capitalism is to double down on the Reagan Revolution — lower taxes and shrink government further. Progressives have not yet come up with a solution of such seductive simplicity. Their standard prescription — higher taxes, more regulation, a stronger social welfare net, and more investment in education — may be sensible. But it lacks the rallying power of Palin’s call to smash crony capitalism by depriving the elites of their political tool — big government.  (Chrystia Freeland)
Freeland sneeringly calls the separation of Wall Street and State "seductive simplicity," but that is the key to pulling our economy and our federal budget out of the crony crapitalist quagmire.  The "standard prescription" of the progressives will only exacerbate our economic misery by encouraging even more state-sponsored crony crapitalism.

A few years ago, Mr. AOW and I attended a Gathering of Eagles event. Code Pink was also there, protesting the Eagles, the war, etc.

Many were wearing kefiyyahs.

The CPUSA also had a prominent presence that day.

Music was being played: the protest songs from the 60s, including "We Shall Overcome," "Bridge over Troubled Water," and "Blowin' in the Wind." I felt that I was in a nightmare of a time warp.

Various groups that hate America have banded together as Occupiers in 2011. And the vast majority of the Occupiers are well to do folks -- or idjit college students looking for an excuse to cut class.

The OWS protesters are a testament to how well our Marxist education system's brainwashing efforts have work. These unwitting fools will go out and fight for their own eventual enslavement.

In our continuing critique, let's remember, "He who controls the images controls the culture." Right now the images of OWS are in control. I doubt that many readers here, Silverfiddle, will listen to reporting from Democracy Now! or pick up the latest copy of The Nation for its coverage.

No you'll take the sensationalized images as representative. After all, the evening news knows that a rational interview with a protester isn't good ratings, right?

But you're right. This nation really shies away from commitment when it comes to our comfort. Let's face it, the demonstrators in Syria are doing more in the name of freedom than our military, right? Yeah, the right wing ain't in this one either despite our agreement that our government is a corporatist fraud.

So where do we go from here? What is the path toward change? Elections?

Hell, I was listening to Hillary, the right wings nemesis, pimp for the Egyptian military this morning. The pipeline? She's assuring everyone that just because it was vetted by a company named by Transcanada who name Transcanada as a major client there is no cause for concern. What could go wrong?

We are owned and the right is offering a string of drunks, pervs and the mentally ill as an alternative. Not encouraging.

Should we take refuge in Raygun worship? We have the meme that he caused the downfall of the Soviet Union as if some American pussy took part in Solidarnosc, the Prague Spring or even got of their ass during the Hungarian counter revolution. No, like the Syrians the Eastern European and Soviet resistance did the heavy lifting and you crap on them by insinuating that the change came because of American exceptionalism.

Yeah, Reagan made it possible, I get it.

And Sarah Palin will lead us into a new age of prosperity and freedom. Snap out of the freaking fever dream. We've been through a period of low taxes and low regulation. The oligarchy freaking stole everything not nailed down. WAKE UP.

So let's find a way out or it's going to come to no good end. The corporatists own power and they will own it in your little Libertarian fairy land. SNAP OUT OF IT!

Lord NO !
It gets worse, AOW. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts opened its Palestinian film festival and there was a table selling various products and crafts. I bought a kefiyyah. Nice on.

You remind me of all the times wearing it has caused a fringe right winger to have a nice tight bowel movement every time they see it.

"There are two misconceptions held by many Americans.  The first is that communism ceased to be a threat when the Soviet Union imploded.  The second is that the New Left of the Sixties collapsed and disappeared as well.  "The Sixties are dead," wrote columnist George Will ("Slamming the Doors," Newsweek, Mar. 25, 1991)

"Because the New Left lacked cohesion it fell apart as a political movement.  However, its revolutionaries reorganized themselves into a multitude of single issue groups.

"Thus we now have for example, radical feminists, black extremists, anti-war ‘peace' activists, animal rights groups, radical environmentalists, and ‘gay' rights groups.

"All of these groups pursue their piece of the radical agenda through a complex network of organizations such as the Gay Straight Lesbian Educators Network (GSLEN), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), People for the American Way, United for Peace and Justice, Planned Parenthood, Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), and Code Pink for Peace. ..."

OWS is just the latest incarnation of the same old Sick-sties push for Upheaval and Social Disintegration that sprung up after having been sedulously cultivated and nurtured by members and disciples of the Frankfurt school in our university classrooms for several decades.

It has always been about Treasonous Nihilism masquerading as Humanitarianism. Most of its practitioners are merely pawns -- callow followers too eager to find any excuse to stave off acceptance of adult responsibility, too weak, too lazy or too inept to think for themselves -- so they follow trends set for them by today's version of The Pied Piper.

After all, doing what you've been told to do in Sunday School and obeying your parents is SO dull and BAAAAAAWRING. so IRRELEVANT. So STULTIFYING. so -- Ugh! -- MIDDLE CLASS! So why not try SLOW forms of SUICIDE, instead? It might be "kicky,"

Rather than shower these victims of intellectual seduction and self-delusion with contempt, we ought to pity them, because they are victims every bit as much as those of us who find their grubby, truculent, dissolute, sometimes delinquent presence irksome.

Ducky, do you mean like this article in The Nation:

The Audacity of Occupy Wall Street

http://www.thenation.com/article/164348/audacity-occupy-wall-street

Poor Joe. "he set off to the University of Connecticut to get an MFA in his passion—puppetry. Three years and $35,000 in student loans later, he emerged with degree in hand, and because puppeteers aren’t exactly in high demand, he went looking for work at his old school."

Are you friggin kidding me? Puppetry?

"Like a lot of the young protesters who have flocked to Occupy Wall Street, Joe had thought that hard work and education would bring, if not class mobility, at least a measure of security (indeed, a master’s degree can boost a New York City teacher’s salary by $10,000 or more)."

PUPPETRY?

"Down is the new up."

PUPPETRY?

Why stop at a Masters when you could be a...uhm.... Doctor of Puppets?

So, he quits his job, goes to school to get an MFA in puppetry, and now bitches that all he can get is a sub teaching position at half the salary he made previously?

Yeah, that is audacious... as in "the bold or arrogant disregard of normal restraints"

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with Joe and his love of puppets, but seriously?

Me, I have a great interest in Celtic Studies but there is a reason why I am a Systems Architect and not a Professor of Celtic Studies. In a few more years when I retire, again... I'll pursue my MLitt in Celtic Studies.

Celtic Studies, like puppetry, is a hobby education rather than a career education. It's something you pursue because you are interested in it, not because you are going to graduate and go out and make a ton of money, or even enough money to live on comfortably.

I suppose he could always get a job with the Muppets, like I could possibly get a job teaching Celtic Studies, but I wouldn't bet on it.

So, I am a Systems Architect, and I enjoy my work. In six or seven years my youngest will be done with school, and I will have my Masters in Supply Chain Management.

Then, I'll take a couple of years off, move to Ireland, and get my MLitt at UC Dublin. It will be paid for in advance, not with loans, and when I'm finished I'll have multiple options if I want to go back to work, continue with further studies, or kick back on a beach in the Caribbean.

Seriously, would you advise your kids to go here?

Shakespeare never got a degree in Poetry or Literature.

Jefferson never got a degree in Professional Writing.

The parents of the Dionne Quintplets probably never attended a Sex Education class. ;-)

People with enormous talent find ways to use it.

People who admire enormous talent often want to imitate it, but wind up teaching others about it, instead.

Personally, I think the concept of treating the Art as an academic subject is inherently flawed.

"Education rears disciples, imitators, and routinists, not pioneers of new ideas and creative geniuses. The schools are not nurseries of progress and improvement, but conservatories of tradition and unvarying modes of thought."

Is he saying that none of those he names received education. None of them apprenticed in the guild or studied under the masters of the day?

Gerrit Dou and Fabritious didn't study with Rembrandt?

Raphael didn't run a studio employing young artists?

von Mises once again proves he's a shallow idiot sharing the bizarro world with Murray Rothbart

Ducky,

Apprenticeship, as well you know, is entirely different from going through an academic sausage factory determined to issue a "standardized" product acceptable to an Established Power Structure in whatever field.

The great geniuses may have been "taught" their ABC's but the contributions for which they are famed and revered came from inside themselves -- the products of unique, inspired Vision and willful determination.

I wonder if there is a Ph.D. thesis anywhere that compares well with the works of a Jane Austen, a Bronte, a Dickens, a James, a Wharton or a Mary Lasswell?

~ FreeThinke

FYI: The verification word this time is CHIPPER. ;-)

Having graduated from one of our most prestigious Conservatories of Music, Ducky, I have to agree with von Mises.

What we call "education" is for the most part regurgitative.

Actual experience in a given field through apprenticeship, individual exploration and continued practical application is more apt to produce creative results.

The Academy wants you to do it THEIR way.

Insight, intuition, genuine creativity fosters every attempt to find your OWN way.

Results may be be high uneven in the latter case, and many failures are sure to result, but independence from orthodoxy gives greater impetus to true genius than a standardized process where everything tends to be cut and dried.

~ FreeThinke

PS: BEING an artist is almost the antithesis of learning ABOUT Art from an academician's point of view. I am not suggesting, however that we do away with the Academy merely see it in perspective. - FT

"the contributions for which they are famed and revered came from inside themselves"

to less extent than you think -- Newton admitted that he stood on the shoulder of giants.

An untutored Michaelangelo would have been less important than the tutored one we know and love.

"I wonder if there is a Ph.D. thesis anywhere that compares well with [a novel]"

They're not supposed to, they're different things.

But if you want good theses, consider Hugh Everett's (many worlds theory [and father of indie musician "E" from eels]) or de Broglie's (particle wave duality).

"Apprenticeship, as well you know, is entirely different from going through an academic sausage factory"

A PhD *is* an apprenticeship.

jez said...

"The wall street gamblers wasted that money because they knew uncle sam would bail them out."

Odd that they spent so much money obfuscating the toxic debts in order to sell them on. If they were confident of a bail-out, why not just sell them openly? That way they'd save on the rock-star fees they paid their maths PhDs, and on setting up decoy companies in the bahamas to pretend had something to do with the financial products that were really just packages of dodgy mortgages.

Was that all just for fun?

Silverfiddle said...

The key word there, Jez, is "toxic." They had to hid the fact that the debt was bad or no one would buy it from them. Those who did know designed exotic instruments to bet against themselves.

Bottom line is none of this would have happened had government stayed out of the mortgage markets.

Also they would not have acted so recklessly had they known with certainty that they would have to eat whatever losses they incurred.

The same thing is now playing out on a grand scale in Europe.

You can only borrow for so long. Somebody's gotta pay the piper. This insidious government-banker axis of evil has got to be broken.
